How Much Does A Funeral Cost In Australia?

Funerals are an important part of a person’s passing, giving friends and family the opportunity to express grief, commemorate the life of the departed and provide much needed support to each other. They do, however come with their share of logistical and financial responsibilities. So, just how much does a funeral cost in Australia? Let’s take a closer look.

The Variables Involved in Funeral Costs

Funerals in Australia vary significantly in cost, primarily depending on the services and options chosen by the family. This variability is due to the wide range of funeral services available, catering to different personal, cultural and financial needs.

Burial Packages

Burial packages typically include elements like the burial plot at a cemetery or a memorial garden, a tombstone or monument and a service to mourn the deceased. These packages often encompass service fees for the coordination and professional handling of the funeral itself, which may involve a funeral director, hearse and coffin.

At Timeless Funerals, we offer two main funeral packages: the Celebration Graveside Burial Package ($5,295), to honour your loved one surrounded by nature and the Tribute Church to Burial Package ($6,295) for those who prefer to say farewell the traditional way. Visit our Burial Package page for a full list of our inclusions.

Cremation Packages

Cremation packages are an increasingly popular choice for Australian families and consist of the cremation process itself, a suitable container for the cremated remains and a memorial or urn if desired. Some families prefer this option due to the increased flexibility it offers in terms of memorialisation.

Timeless Funerals offers a wide range of cremation packages. From our budget No Service, No Attendance options such as The Grace Package Direct Cremation from $2,295, to our more traditional Harmony Package Single Cremation ($5,995) and Repose Package Church to Cremation ($6,795). Visit our Cremation Packages page for a full list of our inclusions.

Coffins

Coffins are essential components of most funerals and can range vastly in price. They differ in style, material and quality. Whether you choose a simple, economical coffin or a high-end, elaborate casket, it all contributes to the overall funeral costs.

At Timeless Funerals, we have coffins for every budget, from our more economical Polished (MDF) Veneer coffins (from $1,595) to our top of the range Polished Timber Coffins (from $2,595). We also offer a bespoke or decorated coffin and matching urn with the theme of your choice (from $2,195).

Urns

For those choosing cremation, the selection of an urn is an important decision. Urns, like coffins, can range from basic containers to intricately designed, high-end varieties. Urns will vary in shape and size depending on their intended purpose (e.g., scattering ashes or housing ashes permanently).

Timeless Funerals offers a variety of urn options and additional services for those wishing to upgrade their funeral package. Choose from our Small Scattering Urns (from $99), Large Scattering Urns (from $195), Bio-degradable Water Urns (from $195), Timber Urns (from $250) or Decorative Urns (from $395). Floral Arrangements

Funeral flower types and colours can symbolise various emotions and can help express feelings that are sometimes hard to put into words. The cost of funeral flowers can vary greatly based on several factors. This includes the type of flowers, the size and intricacy of the arrangements and whether they’re in season or not.

We can provide a range of funeral flowers, including coffin covers and wreaths. Our small coffin covers start from $525, medium coffin covers from $795, with our large and extra-large coffin covers ranging from $995 to $1,495 and above. We can also provide standard floral arrangements to match the coffin cover from $495. Our floral wreaths are available in 65cm diameter ($440), 80cm diameter (from $550), as well as heart-shaped and cross-shaped (from $440).

Additional Extras

There may also be other additional services and fees associated with the cremation or funeral, which will also factor into your total costs. For a direct cremation, this may include dressing of the deceased, additional fees for transfer and cremation of larger coffins (110kg+), viewings at the mortuary, witnessing insertion at the crematorium and international postage and handling of ashes. For standard funerals, this may include extra guest viewings, celebrant or clergy fees and hearse or funeral car hire.
